Consideration of representation
Representation of age-
Our film opening includes representations of age as our main character is a teenager. Teenageer stories are the most favourable and popular in the horror industry as we found out from the questionnaire we did. Cath's young age builds empathy from the audience towards her as people tend to feel more sorry for people under the age of 18, it also represents how vulnerable Cath actually is. Another way in which age is emphasised in our film is that Cath is leaving school and that she is wearing school uniform, this emphasises her young age and vulnerability. Furthermore, when Cath is speaking to her mum, we can clearly see the age difference as Cath's mum seems more responsible telling Cath that she will pick her up from school. Cath insisting that she's fine and that she will get a train home shows how naive she is. This makes Cath look like a stereotypical character that plays the victim in a horror film.
Representation of gender-
Our film opening also includes representations of gender as our main character is a girl which is very common in most horror films. This is part of the male gaze theory by Laura Mulvey which suggests that all media products encourage the characters and audience to "leer" at and "look" at women. By having a young attractive female play the role of Cath, this attracts young males to watch the film. This is a reason why women being the main victim is usually stereotypical in horror films.
